All Saints layer boots on eBay

I spied a pair of genuine All Saint layer boots on eBay this week.

Although many pairs have changed hands down the years, they have been becoming increasingly thin on the ground.

Grab them while you can!

All Saints Layer Boots - size 9
SOLD FOR £130

*EXTREMELY RARE* pair of used ALL SAINTS SPITALFIELDS 'LAYER BOOTS' as worn by 11th Doctor Matt Smith during DOCTOR WHO Series 5 (2010).

More details can be found at the excellent Making My 11th Doctor Costume blog here:
Making My 11th Doctor Costume: Boots - All Saints

Once word got out that these were identified to be the very pair worn by the Doctor, they quickly sold out at All Saints and have been pretty much scarce on the secondary market since.

This pair are size UK 9 / EU 43. Please make sure you know your size and read my description carefully.

Note: the 'worn in' look is part of the style on the boot. However, these boots are getting on for five years old! Whilst every attempt to maintain them has been made, nevertheless there is some very slight cracking to the leather on the right boot and the soles are a bit worn. I have tried to take pictures which accurately reflect the wear on the boots. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Thank you and good luck!

*Please be aware of your size as there are no returns accepted. Shoes are sold as-is. Thanks!

Day Of The Doctor - costume portraits

It’s less than ten days until the 50th Anniversary special, and the BBC have released some high resolution pictures of Matt Smith in full costume.

The cashmere frock coat gets its penultimate outing.

This is worn over a new charcoal fine Prince of Wales checked waistcoat; blue shirt; and a new deep purple and small polka dot bow tie.

The trousers are a pair of his usual G-Star RAW; and he wears the purple boots to go with the frock coat.

The picture at the top gives a good view of the boots, and how high they come up the ankle.

Must say I’m looking forward to seeing Matt in action again!

All Saints layer boots - pair on eBay

Just to show these things do still happen, there was a pair of AllSaints layer boots on eBay this week, though despite their 99p starting price, it looks like someone did an off-listing deal.

All Saints Layer Boots on eBay

Can’t say I’ve seen many of the original All Saints Layer Boots on eBay for a while, so I thought these worth flagging up if anyone needs a pair of size 11s!
Their price, £250, is very much on the upper limit of what I’ve seen them go for - but demand dictates I suppose.

All Saints Layer Boots
These are the boots worn by Matt Smith in Series 5 of Doctor Who, and are now the holy grail of Doctor Who cosplay.

Since going of the shelves in store they have become almost impossible to find, which has also made them more valuable.

I’d love to be wearing them myself but they are way too big for me.

Hide - costume portrait

Today sees the release of the promotional stills for the next episode, Hide.

This was the first episode to be filmed with Jenna-Louise Colman back in June last year, and at the time we got the first official glimpse of The Doctor’s new costume.

Now the new stills are have a much better look at this combination.

He is wearing the brown bow tie he first wore in The Rings Of Akhaten.

The shirt is new - and is in a blueish grey stripe.

The now favourite grey waistcoat is on show again, and like The Rings Of Akhaten, is without the double fob chain.

Same old G-Star RAW black jeans again, with the new purple brogue boots.

As an aside I’m not too impressed with this photo. It has been crudely cut out and I swear part of his right boot is missing - if it isn’t, it looks bloody odd!

Also released with this image is a picture of Matt in the full Tenth Doctor’s pumpkin orange space suit, though from what I can see the SB6 patches are not present and there are no scars from their removal. It appears to be a recreated costume rather than a re-ue of an existing, unless anyone can think of where this version was seen before.

Cold War - costume portrait

The next episode is coming soon, and the BBC official publicity stills are out.

Again there is a really great full length portrait of Matt Smith in costume.

The Doctor has ANOTHER new bow tie, from what must be a very full drawer in the TARDIS wardrobe.
This time its brown with a grid of cream coloured circles.

There is a new shirt, with light blue and pink stripes on a blue background.

Again he is wearing his favourite G-Star RAW black jeans and grey waistcoat, like in The Rings Of Akhaten wearing it without the fob chain.

But the one thing that is a surprise is that he is wearing his old black boots from series six - and if you look very closely you can see they are worn with extraordinary long laces which wrap around the ankle several times before tying in a rough bow on the inside of the ankle. Interesting.

Behold: the shoes of Rassilon

Now the first episodes of the new series are out, I think it’s time to reveal a trade secret in The Doctor’s latest attire that would otherwise go completely unnoticed, and give a bit of credit where credit’s due.

If you’ve watched any of the old Doctor Who Confidential episodes, or the documentaries on the DVDs you’ll have picked up that a lot of crew working on the series are themselves long time fans.
They often sneak in secret in jokes or spend bit more time than the usual to make the episodes have hidden depths.

When the boot makers were asked to prepare new footwear for series seven, part of the brief was to make the boots more ornate and intricate.

Their response was to decorate all edges of the leather with a hand-punched design.

This detailing extends to the toes of the boot, over which is a scrolled pattern.

Rather than just do some random design, the cutter at the boot makers said “Let’s have some fun”.
He looked on the internet and downloaded an image of the Seal Of Rassilon, first used as the symbol of the Time Lords during The Deadly Assassin in 1976.

Passing it to his cutter, the boot maker said “Use this, but make it different”.

As a result he came up with the design on the purple boots which has a mirror symmetry rather than rotational as seen on the Rassilon Seal.

A second pair of boots in brown were also made to the same pattern, but these have a nondescript design on the toe and aren't used as prolifically as the purple version.

You can see here the finished toe of the boots, with the card pattern used to make the hole punches.
The figure-eight design of the Rassilon seal is clearly evident, now you know what it is supposed to represent.

How cool is that? And how subtle so no-one really knows - until now!

The Bells Of Saint John - costume portraits

The new series of Doctor Who is only days away, and there has been another collection of publicity still from the BBC press office.

Included in this batch are character portraits, including The Doctor in all his new finery.

The shots released give the best view yet of the new look.

The bow tie is a moody black silk number, with a subtle gold floral design.
Very nice!

His shirt is a pale blue striped dress shirt, with french cuffs and a plain (un-tabbed) collar.
Very smart!

We can see some detail now of the grey waistcoat, which has a woven fish-scale effect and silk buttons. it’s finished off with a double Albert pocket watch fob chain.
Very posh!

We can now get a decent look at his purple cashmere frock coat with corduroy collar and horn-button cuffs.
Very exclusive!

We can now very clearly see his two-tone purple and brown boots, emblazoned with an intricate hand-punched design.
Very fancy!

He still seems to be clinging onto those old G-Star RAW black jeans though.
Very last season!

Series Seven promo images -
Photoshop disasters?

The second half of Series Seven is less than a month away, and the BBC publicity machine has creaked into action and released the first images of Matt and Louise this year.

A lot has been written about the sneak peeks at the monsters awaiting us, but with the eyes I have my focus is on the costume Matt is wearing!

And OMG - WHAT is he wearing??!!

Now I like these photoshopped images as much as the next guy, and having worked in advertising for 20 years before becoming a tailor I have more than the average idea of what goes into something like this.

But this has been photoshopped to within two steps of hell!

Where has that GOLD bow tie come from?

And having found the original cashmere fabric, I can tell you it is NOT that shade of plum and the woven grid on it is most definitely not that shade of purple.

You can see his new boots, but again the colour combinations there are somewhat twisted from the real thing.

A similar distortion can be seen on the covers of the latest tie-in novels to be released.

Someone wrote to me recently asking about the new purple waistcoat.

What purple waistcoat I wondered?

I then realised they meant the cover of Plague Of The Cybermen where his new GREY waistcoat has been retouched to look a mauve colour.

Just one tip - if you’re assembling a cosplay for series seven, these promo images are NOT the thing to use for reference for colour!

Gallifrey One -
Matt Smith Frock Coat photo shoot

You might have noticed that on the Thursday meet and greet at Gallifrey One I debuted my new Matt Smith series seven costume.

It was all a bit last minute - I didn’t start work on the frock coat until the 1st of February, less than two weeks before I flew out - and the velvet waistcoat was thrown together on the Tuesday  Tuesday before, the day before I set out!

I’m pretty darn pleased with the frock coat.
Leaving it this late did mean I got a lot of the subtle details nailed which some others might have missed or got wrong.

One thing in particular I did spot was the bizarre configuration of buttons and buttonholes down the front.

Firstly there are NO buttons!

However, there are a dozen buttonholes - three in each lapel and three on either side around the middle.

The lowest of these is unusually above the waistline seam.

They don’t show up in most photos, but if you look very closely there is a shot in the latest trailer where the lighting picks them out (see left).

This arrangement of holes reminds me very much of the frock coats worn by Tom Baker during his era.

While at Gallifrey, I had the chance of a decent photo shoot courtesy of Scott Sebring, who kindly offers his professional services to the cosplayers free of charge!

Here is my costume in all its glory. Thanks Scott!

Matt Smith’s NEW boots!

As you will have just seen, I have debuted my latest Matt Smith Costume at Gallifey One. I pulled it together over the past few weeks, and with barely a day to spare I collected my latest boots from the boot makers to Matt Smith.

The boots are truly beyond stunning.

They are made from two colours, a dark brown and a purple to compliment the new Cashmere Frock Coat.

To top that they are covered in hundreds of hand punched detailing at every twist and turn of the leather.

When I collected my boots, I went to their workshop where all the boots for some amazing film and tv work are done.
Recently they worked on Les Miserables, Lincoln and The Dark Knight as well as the latest Thor movie.

Having just finished the boots they still had the card pattern lying around, so I was able to get an insight into how shoes are designed and cut.

The boots are then made around a foot shape, known as a “last”. I have had several boots made for me now, but when it can to making these they could not lay their hands on my last.

Quick thinking, they realised my feet are pretty much the same size as Matt’s, so they used Matt Smith’s actual last to my my boots!!!!

This also meant the pattern didn’t need to be graded up or down, so what I have are preciely the same as Matt’s in every regard.

How cool is that??!

If you look very closely you’ll see the lasts are labelled WHO rather than Matt’s name as his casting was top secret.

The boots have one very last secret to give up, which I’ll show you properly very soon. It’s such a subtle and clever touch - and so cool when you hear what it is!

eBay Layer Boots

Just to show these things do happen, a friend of mine spotted a pair of genuine All Saints Layer Boots on eBay!

However, after the listing be online for a few days it was suddenly closed with a Buy It Now.
me thinks someone did an off-eBay deal. I wonder who? (clue - it wasn’t me)

All Saints Layer Boot UK Size 9, EU 43
This is an amazing pair of used All Saints boots in a size 9, I love these shoes. They work well with any outfit, you can wear it with just about anything, casual or smart and it looks great! It's also in very good condition as I bought 2 at the time and rotated between them. There is evidence of general wear and tear, and the inside heel is beginning to peel off on either foot (see picture), very few scratches here and there. In other words, you'll have to be looking really hard to notice any scruffs; the leather has been well looked after with frequent polishing. I also have a half insole in, for extra comfort and support against long hours of wear.

All Saints retailed this at £165. I am starting the auction at 99p, so no matter how you slice this, you're starring at a great bargain. Good luck to all interested and any questions are more than welcomed.

A Christmas costume of delights

So, the Ponds have gone - and so it seems is any form of style The Doctor had in his wardrobe!

Matt started out in season five with a slightly make-shift costume, cobbled together in haste. This was refined in series six with a more tailored interpretation of his tweed and jeans look.

But all that has well and truly gone out of the window come The Snowmen, this years Christmas special.

There were a number of fan-taken location photos floating around the net, but we now have the first of the official publicity pictures show The Doctors new look.

Here’s a little mini breakdown with my first impressions of the costume, and how it seems to be a nod to a lot of previous Doctors from times gone past.

All Saints Layer Boots - BACK IN STOCK*

* sort of

Shock of shocks – All Saints, the makers of the Layer boots as worn by Matt Smith in series five, have brought the style of boots back in stock!

The new boots are currently ONLY available through the US site.

All Saints US
Cropped Layer Boot

Don’t get too excited though. Firstly don’t forget Matt wore replicas of the boots; and these ones are called Cropped Layer Boots as they are one eyelet shorter at the top.

Here is a comparison between my own Layer Boots, and the new Cropped Layer Boots.

If you want to be picky, the soles are now a tan leather rather than black, but if you can overlook these couple of slight differences, they are probably worth getting.

Series Five items spotted on eBay

I was having a browse on eBay this week and came across a couple of listing showing there is still a supply of ‘original’ series five item, if you look hard enough - and have deep pockets.

Firstly I found a pair of All Saints Layer Boots, size 10/10.5.

The US based seller started them at US$49, with an undisclosed reserve. From what I can guess, a buyer did a deal with the seller, and the listing was pulled, before being reposted with a fixed price of US$475.
Remember these boots were around the £120 price tag when new.

Up for auction is the VERY RARE damn near impossible to obtain pair of original ALLSAINTS SPITALFIELDS "LAYER BOOT", the very same pair as seen on Matt Smith in DOCTOR WHO series, this boot style was also his personal pair off set at the time. These have been long out of production by AllSaints and have been pretty much scarce on the secondary market since. This pair is a UK/EU 44, the rarest and more desirable size to find. If you were a 10-10.5 or even 11 US they should fit great. This pair has the Vibram rubber bottoms professionally placed to match Smith's as the 11th Doctor and also, well, to keep you from slipping. Note: the "worn in" look is part of the style on the boot. Please make sure you know your size and read my description carefully.
Stand out with Cosplay with the REAL DEAL! these are virtually impossible to come by now, don't miss out!

Please be aware of your size as there are no returns accepted. Sold as-is. Thanks! :)

boots - Boots - BOOTS!

This week I picked up a number of pairs of the Season Six Matt Smith boots from the Bootmakers.

Having spent some time talking to them while getting my own boots made, they agreed, exclusively through me, to help a number of other cosplayers get the Holy Grail of Matt Smith footwear!

The shoes they made were very wide ranging in sizings a fit, and all were done to precision.

One pair were a size 13 – another much small, but for a very wide fitting (see right).

The bootmakers who kitted out The Doctor, although they are one of the most famous footwear makers for film and tv, they are a small company and deal exclusively with production companies or theatres, and are used to bulk orders for chorus lines or the requirements for the cast of a complete film.

As a result they are NOT happy to take calls from the public or make one-off items which occupy more of their time than it does to make them.

However, through negotiations I conducted with them, they are willing to make boots for Doctor Who fans, so long as the orders come exclusively through me.

This way I can answer all questions prior to making them; arrange for the foot tracings and measurements to be taken and passed on; payments to be made; and delivery globally via my personal FedEx shipping account.

As you can see, I have already arranged a number of pairs, and one of the buyers has posted about it in his blog, Very Well Dressed Hitchhiker.

UPDATE
This service has now been discontinued due to sharp increases in manufacturing costs, and declining quality of finished product. Sorry for any inconvenience

Boots - a good alternative

After spotting a good alternative to the Blue Shirt, my eagle-eyed friend has found another good budget option for the Season Six boots.

Marks & Spencer currently have a ankle boot that’s a dead ringer for Matt Smith’s latest boot of choice - and for a shade under £70!

Knowing what the real boot is like, I’d say it’s a pretty good alternative, ticking a lot of the boxes.

However it is 7-hole rather than 11-hole; has a plain rather than fret stitched bridge seam; and is a bit clunky.

Still, not bad for £70!
