Matt Smith’s costume tests

Some photos have been doing the rounds on the net, and I’ve avoided reprinting them here, but the latest was posted by Karen Gillian herself, so I’m kinda thinking they aren’t being seen as too confidential.

Most of the photos relate to a costume test day held to finalise Matt Smith’s costume as the Eleventh Doctor.

The first shot shows Matt wearing a cream coloured long coat.

From what I understand this is a costume Ray Holman was developing for the Eleventh Doctor to wear. For whatever reason it was shelved.

Ray can be seen in the mirror taking the photo.

Next Matt is seen in a short sleeved white t-shirt, under a black high-cut waistcoat, worn with black jeans and a leather belt.

It’s hard to tell, but Matt may or may not be the All Saints boots which were his specific choice.

Next Matt adds a simple three-quarter length black coat.

Matt then changes outfit, adding a large dark grey coat, with a grey tie and shirt and the black waistcoat.

It’s amusing to remember that costume designer Ray Holman also choose the Belstaff coat for Sherlock, and this look isn’t so far removed from that.

The next look is all a bit piratey, with a red and white striped t-shirt under another waistcoat.

This waistcoat doesn’t have the extended points at the bottom.

The jacket over the top has brass military style buttons.

Matt looks less impressed with combining the striped t-shirt with an overcoat.
Next Matt changes the the striped t-shirt for a checked shirt.

The discarded t-shirt can be seen hanging on the rail behind him.

The jacket and waistcoat look to be the same - don’t be distracted by the very different lighting between this and the previous shot.

Matt then switches the brass-buttoned jacket for a leather one.

Finally Matt tries on a Paul Smith shirt, with braces and a bow tie -
The Doctor is in the building!

The last photo, which Karen Gillian posted on Twitter, is the very first time Matt and Karen were taken together in full and final costume.

Matt’s jacket is the Harris Tweed seen in Time Of Angels and if you look closely he is wearing a blue bow tie with the burgundy shirt (as above), a colour combination never seen in series five.

Time Of The Doctor - costume portraits

The dust has barely settled since the 50th Anniversary special, and the BBC publicity machine is already getting into gear to promote the Christmas special, and Matt Smith’s final outing as The Doctor.

From the look of things, aside from the battered top hat, he’s wearing exactly the same costume as seen in The Snowmen last year.

Day Of The Doctor - costume portraits

It’s less than ten days until the 50th Anniversary special, and the BBC have released some high resolution pictures of Matt Smith in full costume.

The cashmere frock coat gets its penultimate outing.

This is worn over a new charcoal fine Prince of Wales checked waistcoat; blue shirt; and a new deep purple and small polka dot bow tie.

The trousers are a pair of his usual G-Star RAW; and he wears the purple boots to go with the frock coat.

The picture at the top gives a good view of the boots, and how high they come up the ankle.

Must say I’m looking forward to seeing Matt in action again!

The Crimson Horror - one-off costume

This week’s episode, The Crimson Horror doesn’t seem to have any separate costume portraits of The Doctor, although there is a composite publicity still that seems to use one.

If we had this image on its own we’d have a great source of detail for the costume.

The costume mainly consists of a three-piece set comprising a slightly shortened frock coat, waistcoat and trousers.

He wears the brown brogue boots first worn in The Snowmen over Christmas.

As a substitute I thought I’d take a look back over some on-set pictures taken during filming, which show the costume off quite well.

This shot has a nice view of the back, showing the jacket to be in a frock coat style, heavily adapted.

Hide - costume portrait

Today sees the release of the promotional stills for the next episode, Hide.

This was the first episode to be filmed with Jenna-Louise Colman back in June last year, and at the time we got the first official glimpse of The Doctor’s new costume.

Now the new stills are have a much better look at this combination.

He is wearing the brown bow tie he first wore in The Rings Of Akhaten.

The shirt is new - and is in a blueish grey stripe.

The now favourite grey waistcoat is on show again, and like The Rings Of Akhaten, is without the double fob chain.

Same old G-Star RAW black jeans again, with the new purple brogue boots.

As an aside I’m not too impressed with this photo. It has been crudely cut out and I swear part of his right boot is missing - if it isn’t, it looks bloody odd!

Also released with this image is a picture of Matt in the full Tenth Doctor’s pumpkin orange space suit, though from what I can see the SB6 patches are not present and there are no scars from their removal. It appears to be a recreated costume rather than a re-ue of an existing, unless anyone can think of where this version was seen before.

Cold War - costume portrait

The next episode is coming soon, and the BBC official publicity stills are out.

Again there is a really great full length portrait of Matt Smith in costume.

The Doctor has ANOTHER new bow tie, from what must be a very full drawer in the TARDIS wardrobe.
This time its brown with a grid of cream coloured circles.

There is a new shirt, with light blue and pink stripes on a blue background.

Again he is wearing his favourite G-Star RAW black jeans and grey waistcoat, like in The Rings Of Akhaten wearing it without the fob chain.

But the one thing that is a surprise is that he is wearing his old black boots from series six - and if you look very closely you can see they are worn with extraordinary long laces which wrap around the ankle several times before tying in a rough bow on the inside of the ankle. Interesting.

The Rings of Akhaten - costume portraits

Today see the BBC release some nice publicity images from The Rings of Akhaten.

Amongst the images are a couple of full length portrait shots of Matt in costume.

He’s wearing the same grey wasitcoat worn in The Bells Of St John, though this time without the gold watch chain.

We get a nice view of the new purple boots.

The Doctor continues to wear the glasses which first appeared in The Angels take Manhattan.

There’s another new bow tie. This time in a deep burgundy with a light block pattern.

The trousers seem to be the G-Star RAW jeans, worn since series six.

The Bells Of Saint John - costume portraits

The new series of Doctor Who is only days away, and there has been another collection of publicity still from the BBC press office.

Included in this batch are character portraits, including The Doctor in all his new finery.

The shots released give the best view yet of the new look.

The bow tie is a moody black silk number, with a subtle gold floral design.
Very nice!

His shirt is a pale blue striped dress shirt, with french cuffs and a plain (un-tabbed) collar.
Very smart!

We can see some detail now of the grey waistcoat, which has a woven fish-scale effect and silk buttons. it’s finished off with a double Albert pocket watch fob chain.
Very posh!

We can now get a decent look at his purple cashmere frock coat with corduroy collar and horn-button cuffs.
Very exclusive!

We can now very clearly see his two-tone purple and brown boots, emblazoned with an intricate hand-punched design.
Very fancy!

He still seems to be clinging onto those old G-Star RAW black jeans though.
Very last season!

A Good Man Goes To War - costume portrait

The BBC have issued the publicity stills for A Good Man Goes To War, and it includes a good portrait shot of Matt in costume.

Not to sure about the quality of the Photoshop cutting out though.

The Doctor’s Wife - costume portrait

The next episode, The Doctor’s Wife, has its publicity still released this week, and there’s a nice full length portrait of Matt in costume.

The boots, although they are the black version worn all season, do look a different colour due to the mud from the location filming.

If you look inside the jacket you can just see there is a label below the pocket. I wonder what it says?

Curse Of The Black Spot - costume portrait

This weeks costume portrait for Curse Of The Black Spot shows the costume little changed from The Impossible Astronaut and Day Of The Moon.

Not the best photo. Would have been nice if it was in focus!

Series Six - costume portrait

With series six about to start on tv, the BBC have released a raft of publicity stills, including this costume portrait of Matt Smith.
